Greek highway toll & road rules

Greece does not use a national highway vignette system. Tolls are distance-based, collected point-to-point via physical toll plazas (Diodia) operated by regional motorway companies.

Prices are base state-regulated rates updated following the January 1, 2026 tariff revisions across Greek concession operators. EuroGoPass does not sell digital vignettes for Greece because point-to-point tolling applies. Our smart route planner automatically tallies all active barrier tolls live along your chosen route.

Good to know

  • The 2-Metre Height Barrier: Category 2 applies to standard 4-wheel passenger cars and SUVs with a total height of less than 2.00 metres. If your vehicle, SUV with a large roof box, van, or campervan exceeds 2 metres in total height (or registers over 1.30 metres above the front axle), you will automatically be moved to Category 3, which significantly increases the per-plaza tariff.
  • 2026 Toll Rate Indexation: Effective January 2026, Greek motorway tariffs were revised to adjust for consumer inflation. This includes the Egnatia Odos (A2 highway spanning from Igoumenitsa to the Turkish border) and the Attiki Odos, which now charges a flat rate of 2.55 € per entry for standard passenger cars.
  • GRITS Interoperable E-Pass: If you travel frequently or wish to skip long payment lines during peak summer weekends, you can utilize an electronic toll transponder (like e-Pass, Fast Pass, or Egnatia Pass). Thanks to GRITS (Greek Interoperable Toll Service), a single electronic device works seamlessly across all toll networks in Greece and typically provides a small automated discount per crossing.
  • Payment Methods: Staffed toll booths accept Euro cash and international debit/credit cards (Visa, Mastercard). Unstaffed lanes feature automated card slot machines. Keeping small cash on hand is recommended for smaller regional ramp toll exits.
  • No Seasonal Prices: Greece maintains steady toll rates all year round. Prices do not fluctuate between summer and winter seasons, changing only by official regulatory revisions.

Toll evasion and gate violations

Violation / situationPenalty consequenceEnforcement method
Evading a physical toll plaza barrierSteep statutory traffic fineHandled by local highway police patrols and gate cameras
Entering an electronic lane without a valid transponderBarrier remains lowered + backup requiredRegistered by plaza staff and overhead automated warning signals

Greek toll plazas enforce barrier evasion through highway police and camera systems. Always use the correct lane for your payment method or transponder.

Commonquestions

No. Greece does not use a vignette system. Highways are managed via physical toll plazas where you stop and pay based on the exact distance or sections you travel.

For the 2026 season, driving a standard passenger car (Category 2) from the main northern Evzoni border crossing all the way down to Athens costs approximately 39.60 € in total tolls.

Standard passenger cars with a small trailer or roof rack belong to Category 2, provided the total height remains below 2.00 metres. If a tall roof box or large campervan body crosses the 2-metre mark, it will be classified under Category 3.

Yes. Through the Greek Interoperable Toll Service (GRITS), any official electronic transponder device issued by a Greek motorway company is fully compatible with all other motorway networks, bridges, and tunnels across the country.

The Attiki Odos operates on a flat-rate entry system. For a standard Category 2 passenger car in 2026, the fee is 2.55 € paid at the entrance gate, regardless of how many exits you pass before leaving the ring road.

While you pay Greek point-to-point tolls locally at the plazas, driving to Greece from Central Europe requires traversing multiple digital vignette jurisdictions. EuroGoPass charts your full path, delivers an accurate cash/card budget for Greek toll booths, and instantly bundles the official digital vignettes you need for transit countries like Bulgaria, Slovakia, or Hungary in one single checkout.

  • Tolls are actively collected across all major completed national motorway links (prefixed with "A"), which are divided among several regional operators:
  • A1 (PATHE corridor): Connecting Evzoni (north border) — Thessaloniki — Larissa — Lamia — Athens.
  • A2 (Egnatia Odos): Running west-east from Igoumenitsa (ferry port) — Ioannina — Thessaloniki — Kavala — Kipoi (Turkish border).
  • A8 (Olympia Odos): Linking Athens — Elefsina — Corinth — Patras.
  • A7 (Moreas motorway): Connecting Corinth — Tripoli — Kalamata.
  • A5 (Ionia Odos): Linking Antirrio — Ioannina.
  • A6 (Attiki Odos): The main urban highway network encircling metropolitan Athens.
  • Standalone structures including the Charilaos Trikoupis (Rio-Antirrio) bridge and the Aktio-Preveza undersea tunnel are fully integrated toll points.
