Bosnian highway toll & road rules

Bosnia and Herzegovina does not use a highway vignette system. Instead, tolls are collected directly at physical toll booths based on the exact distance you travel.

Prices are official state rates in Bosnian Convertible Marks (BAM/KM). EUR amounts are approximate and for orientation only. EuroGoPass does not sell digital vignettes for Bosnia because tolls are point-to-point. Our route planner calculates your total expected toll booth fees live based on your route.

02

Toll budgeting

We calculate the expected cash/card costs at the physical toll plazas along your specific path.

03

Pay at the gate

Take a magnetic ticket at the entry barrier, and present it for payment at the exit gate when leaving the motorway.

Good to know

  • The Closed Toll System: When entering the motorway, you press a button to take a ticket. Do not lose it! If you lose your entry ticket, you will be forced to pay the maximum possible toll rate for that entire highway line at the exit booth.
  • The 1.3m Height Rule: Standard passenger cars fall under Category I. However, if you drive a large SUV, van, or campervan where the height directly above the front axle is 1.3 metres or more, your vehicle falls into Category II or III and faces higher rates.
  • Towing a Trailer: Trowing a caravan or utility trailer behind a standard car automatically upgrades your ride from Category I to Category II, resulting in a higher fee at the exit gate.
  • Payment Methods: Major toll plazas on the A1 accept credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) and cash. Staffed booths will frequently accept Euro banknotes informally, but your change will always be returned in local Convertible Marks (BAM). Carrying local cash is strongly advised for smaller exits.
  • Green Card Insurance Mandatory: You must carry a valid physical Green Card (International Motor Insurance Card) when crossing the border into Bosnia. Border officials strictly verify that the "BIH" country box is not crossed out.

Commonquestions

No. Bosnia does not use a vignette system. Highways are managed via physical toll gates where you pay based on the kilometres you drive.

The official currency is the Bosnian Convertible Mark (BAM/KM). However, almost all staffed toll gates accept Euro cash (banknotes only) and major international credit cards like Visa and Mastercard.

You do not need to register anything in advance. When you pull up to the entry gate, automated sensors detect your trailer, which shifts your vehicle into Category II. You simply pay the corresponding higher rate at the exit plaza.

If you cannot present your entry ticket at the exit toll booth, the operator is legally required to charge you the maximum possible toll rate for that specific highway network. Always keep your ticket in a safe place inside the car.

You must check your paper Green Card (insurance certificate). If the "BIH" box is crossed out or missing, your insurance is invalid, and you will be forced to purchase expensive border insurance. A valid physical Green Card is strictly required at border checkpoints.

While you cannot pre-purchase a Bosnian vignette, EuroGoPass maps the active toll sections of the expanding A1 highway network, calculates the exact cash or card fees required for your vehicle class, and bundles this data seamlessly alongside the digital vignettes you need for neighboring transit countries.

  • Tolls are actively collected on all completed segments of the national motorway network:
  • A1 Motorway (Corridor Vc): Major operational sections around Zenica, Sarajevo, and Mostar, as well as the northern border section near Svilaj and southern border section near Bijača.
  • Autoput 9. januar: The northern highway linking Banja Luka, Laktaši, and Doboj.
  • E661 Expressway: Connecting Gradiška (Croatian border) down to Banja Luka.
  • Interconnecting secondary roads and unfinished highway segments remain free of charge.
