Spain highway tolls & driving rules

The majority of Spanish motorways are now toll-free. Fees are only applicable on specific remaining concessionary motorway sections where traditional barrier-plazas are still in operation.

Only specific segments remain under concession. Most A-road ("Autovías") routes are entirely free to use. EuroGoPass calculates your specific route-based costs, ensuring you only pay for the rare sections that still require toll settlement.

How it works

01

Map your Iberian route

Input your start and end points into EuroGoPass; we flag if your route crosses any of the few remaining toll segments.

02

Budget for barrier plazas

We identify where you will encounter physical gates so you can prepare cash or card.

03

Drive free on Autovías

Enjoy the vast majority of the Spanish highway grid completely free of charge.

Good to know

  • No vignettes: Spain does not use a national vignette or sticker system. You never need to pre-purchase access for the highway network.
  • Toll-free evolution: Many highways that were previously tolled (AP-roads) have had their concessions expire and are now completely free to use.
  • Payment at barriers: Where tolls still apply, you take a ticket upon entry and pay the distance-calculated fee at a physical barrier plaza upon exit. All booths accept major credit/debit cards and cash.
  • VIA-T transponders: If you travel frequently in Spain, you can use a VIA-T tag for non-stop transit through toll lanes, though it is not necessary for casual tourism.
  • Towed trailers: As in most systems, towing a large caravan or trailer may increase the vehicle's axle category at toll barriers, resulting in a higher fee than a standard solo passenger car.

Commonquestions

No. Spain does not use a vignette or highway sticker system for private passenger vehicles.

You pay at physical toll barriers (gates) using a credit card or cash. No pre-registration is required.

Not all, but the vast majority are. Only a small fraction of highways (typically designated as "AP" routes) still have toll barriers.

We remove the guesswork by identifying exactly which segments of your route still require toll payment, calculating your total cost, and handling all your necessary digital transit vignettes for your journey to Spain.

  • Autovías (A-prefix): Always free of charge.
  • Autopistas (AP-prefix): Mostly free, with rare exceptions managed by private concessions that still operate toll plazas.
  • Check your route planner — most north-south and east-west corridors no longer charge tolls.
