Portugal highway tolls & electronic systems

Portugal uses a dual toll system: traditional manual barrier plazas and modern "electronic-only" (AET) motorways. There is no national vignette — you pay strictly for the distance traveled.

Prices are distance-based and vary per route. EuroGoPass calculates your precise route costs, identifies which segments require transponders, and helps you secure the correct payment method for electronic-only gantries.

Payment types reflect the 2026 motorway operator network.

How it works

01

Map your Portuguese road trip

Input your start and end destinations into EuroGoPass to reveal both barrier and electronic-only zones.

02

Choose your payment method

For AET (electronic-only) motorways, we guide you through registering your license plate or renting a temporary transponder.

03

Drive barrier-free

On AET roads, simply drive under the gantries; on barrier roads, stop at the plaza to pay by cash or card.

Good to know

  • No national vignette: Portugal does not use vignettes. You do not buy a sticker or a time-based pass.
  • Electronic-only (AET) motorways: Some motorways (marked with "Electronic toll only" signs) have NO payment booths. If you drive here without prior plate registration or a transponder, you will be fined.
  • EasyToll / TollService: These are official methods to link your foreign credit card to your license plate for temporary transit on electronic-only motorways.
  • Rental cars: Most Portuguese rental cars come with an electronic transponder (Via Verde). The tolls are automatically charged to your credit card by the rental agency. Always check your rental agreement for "Toll Service" fees.
  • Payment at barriers: On non-AET roads, you take a ticket upon entering and pay when exiting. All major plazas accept international credit/debit cards and cash.

Toll evasion and enforcement

Late payment of invoiced tollsDebt collection processing + administrative fees

Register your plate or transponder before entering AET motorways — fines are automatic and steep.

Commonquestions

No. Portugal has no vignette system.

You must register your license plate with the "EasyToll" system (linking your card) or use a temporary "TollService" pass.

Usually, yes. Rental cars are typically equipped with a "Via Verde" transponder. The agency will charge your card automatically for any tolls you incur.

Yes, some regions have toll-free motorways (A-roads), but most major north-south corridors and coastal tourist routes are tolled.

We identify which of your route segments are "Electronic-only," preventing accidental fines, and calculate the total toll costs for your budget.

  • Barrier plazas: Manual payment at gates (e.g., A1, A2).
  • Electronic-only (AET): Cameras only, no booths (e.g., A22 Algarve, A28).
  • Some regional A-road motorways remain toll-free; major tourist corridors are typically tolled.
