Croatian highway toll & road rules

Croatia does not use a highway vignette system. Tolls are calculated based on the distance you travel and are paid directly at highway toll plazas.

Pay at the exit

Take a physical ticket at the entry barrier, keep it safe, and pay by cash or card when exiting the motorway.

Good to know

  • The 1.90m Total Height Rule: Category I includes standard passenger cars and SUVs with a total height of up to 1.90 metres. Larger multi-purpose vans, transits, or vehicles with permanent roof boxes exceeding 1.90 metres fall into Category II.
  • Towing a Caravan or Trailer: If you tow a trailer or caravan behind a standard car, your vehicle combination automatically moves up to Category II, triggering a higher rate at the exit plaza.
  • Do Not Lose Your Ticket: When entering the motorway network, a ticket is dispensed at the barrier. Keep this ticket inside your car. If you lose it, the toll operator will charge you the maximum possible amount for that entire highway line.
  • Accepted Payment Methods: Staffed toll booths accept international debit and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro) and Euro cash. Change is given back in Euros.
  • Krk Bridge is Free: The historic toll for crossing the bridge to the Island of Krk has been permanently abolished. Access to the island is entirely free.

Commonquestions

No, Croatia does not have a vignette system. Highways are managed using physical toll plazas where you pay proportionally based on the distance you drive.

Category I is for two-axle vehicles with a maximum total height under 1.90 metres (standard cars, station wagons, and compact SUVs). Category II applies to vehicles over 1.90 metres in height (large vans, commercial transport) or standard cars towing any type of trailer.

Officially, categories are determined by the vehicle's structural height. While standard luggage roof boxes usually do not upgrade your category, commercial or very tall boxes on large SUVs might trigger automated sensors. EuroGoPass guides you through vehicle selection at checkout.

Yes, all major international credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro) are fully accepted at both automated and staffed exit lanes. Dedicated "Fast Card" lanes allow you to scan your card and pass through quickly without waiting for a cashier.

If you cannot present your entry ticket at the exit toll booth, you will be legally penalized by having to pay the maximum possible toll fee for the longest distance on that specific motorway section.

While you cannot pre-purchase a Croatian vignette, EuroGoPass maps the entire active highway network (including the A1 to Split and the Istrian Y), calculates your expected cash or card expenditures for your specific vehicle class, and bundles this alongside any required digital vignettes for transit countries like Austria or Slovenia.

  • Tolls are actively collected across all main national highway corridors:
  • A1 Motorway: The main artery linking Zagreb down to Zadar, Split, and Ploče (Dubrovnik direction).
  • A3 Motorway: The vital east-west transit corridor from the Slovenian border (Bregana) past Zagreb to the Serbian border (Lipovac).
  • A6 Motorway: Connecting the A1 junction at Bosiljevo directly to the coastal city of Rijeka.
  • A8 & A9 (Istrian Y): The highway system network covering the entire Istrian peninsula, including the Učka Tunnel.
  • A2 & A4 Motorways: Routes connecting Zagreb northward to the Slovenian and Hungarian borders.
  • The toll for crossing the Krk Bridge to the Island of Krk has been permanently abolished — access to the island is free.
