German highway toll & road rules

Germany does not use a highway vignette system for passenger cars under 3.5 tonnes. The world-famous Autobahn network is completely free — just drive, with only minor municipal and tunnel exceptions.

Good to know

  • 100% Vignette-Free: Passenger cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and private campervans under 3.5 tonnes do not require any windshield sticker or electronic vignette registration in Germany.
  • The Environmental Badge (Umweltplakette): While motorways are free, over 80 German city centres enforce strict Low Emission Zones (Umweltzone). To enter these areas, your vehicle must display a physical green environmental badge on the windshield. Missing badges trigger automatic or manual 100 € fines.
  • Autobahn Speed Limits: Many sections of the German Autobahn have no permanent speed limit, operating on a recommended speed (Richtgeschwindigkeit) of 130 km/h. However, dynamic overhead signs and fixed zones enforce strict temporary limits that are heavily monitored by speed traps.
  • Trailers are Free: Any trailer, caravan, or utility rig towed behind a light vehicle under 3.5 tonnes travels entirely free on all German motorways.
  • Private Motorhomes vs. Commercial Trucks: The German truck toll (Lkw-Maut) applies down to 3.5 tonnes for commercial transport. However, private motorhomes equipped with permanent living facilities (kitchen, toilet, bed) remain 100% exempt from the highway toll even if they exceed 3.5 tonnes.

There are no vignette fines for light passenger vehicles in Germany because highways are toll-free. However, city environmental regulations and speed limits are strictly enforced for foreign plate numbers.

Commonquestions

No, Germany does not have a highway vignette system for passenger cars, motorcycles, or motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes. The Autobahn network is free.

The Umweltplakette is a physical environmental badge mandatory for entering designated low-emission zones (Umweltzonen) in major German cities like Munich, Berlin, or Frankfurt. You do not need it if you stay strictly on the Autobahn transit highways, but you must display it if you exit into city centres.

Yes, but only two small private infrastructure points in northern Germany: the Warnowtunnel in Rostock and the Herrentunnel in Lübeck. These charge a small localized fee directly at their gates. The entire national highway network is free.

Roughly half of the Autobahn network has no permanent speed limit and relies on a recommended speed of 130 km/h. However, localized limits (indicated by digital overhead gantries or fixed signs) due to construction, traffic, or weather are strictly enforced with steep fines.

If your European road trip passes through Germany toward popular destinations in Austria, Switzerland, Italy, or the Czech Republic, EuroGoPass maps your entire journey. We automatically log the free German legs and instantly bundle the exact digital vignettes or road passes required for the surrounding transit countries in one checkout.

  • The entire federal motorway network (Bundesautobahn), designated by the letter "A" followed by a number, is toll-free for passenger vehicles under 3.5 tonnes. This includes all major transit lifelines: A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A7, A8, A9, A10, A61, and all interconnecting federal highways (Bundesstraßen).
  • The only exceptions are the private Warnow and Herren tunnels located in northern municipal coastal zones.
