Irish highway toll & road rules

Ireland does not use a vignette system. Road fees are collected through a mix of traditional physical toll plazas and a strict barrier-free camera network (eFlow) on the M50 around Dublin.

How it works

01

Map your Irish journey

Enter your starting point and destination (such as Dublin, Cork, or Galway) into EuroGoPass.

02

Calculate your gate budget

We detect if you pass the barrier-free M50 ring road or any regional barrier plazas, breaking down the exact expected costs.

03

Pay dynamically

Stop and pay with cash/card at traditional toll lanes, and log onto the eFlow portal or visit a Payzone outlet to settle your M50 camera fees.

Good to know

  • The strict 8:00 PM next-day rule: The M50 motorway surrounding Dublin operates a barrier-free toll (between Junction 6 and Junction 7). There are no physical booths. Cameras photograph your registration plate. If you do not have a registered account, you must pay the toll before 8:00 PM on the day after your journey. This is a strict deadline, not a 24-hour rolling window.
  • Driving on the left: Ireland drives on the left side of the road. When approaching physical toll plazas, keep in mind that the driver's window and the payment machine/staff booth will line up on the right-hand side of the lane. Ensure your passenger is ready to pay if you are driving a continental left-hand drive car.
  • Dublin Port Tunnel congestion pricing: The Dublin Port Tunnel uses dramatic peak-hour toll hikes to discourage local commuter cars from blocking freight traffic to the port. Driving southbound between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM on weekdays costs a hefty 14.00 €. Timing your trip just a few minutes outside peak windows drops the fee to 3.50 €.
  • Rental cars & eFlow tolls: Most major car rental agencies in Ireland will automatically track your M50 toll crossings via your license plate and charge the unregistered rate plus a small processing fee directly to your credit card. Always verify your rental company's toll policy at the pick-up desk.
  • Interoperable electronic tags: If you are planning an extended trip or moving to Ireland, a single electronic toll tag (from providers like eFlow or Easytrip) works seamlessly across every single toll plaza, bridge, tunnel, and the M50 network in the country, unlocking the lowest possible rates.

Late payments and toll evasion penalties

Violation / situationPenalty consequenceEnforcement method
Failing to pay the M50 eFlow toll by 8 PM the next dayInitial standard toll + 4.00 € late penaltyAutomated notice sent to vehicle owner or rental company
Ignoring the M50 toll notice for more than 14 daysPenalty escalates by an additional 51.00 €Legal demand letter sent to registered address
Unresolved toll evasion past 56 daysFinal penalty addition of 128.00 €; court fines up to 5,000 €Forwarded to national traffic prosecution and court registry

M50 eFlow penalties escalate quickly if you ignore payment notices. Physical toll plazas use on-the-spot enforcement at barrier lanes.

Commonquestions

No. Ireland has no vignette system. Motorways are funded through localized physical toll booths and a single toll camera network on the Dublin M50 ring road.

You must pay manually before 8:00 PM on the day following your transit. You can pay online via the eFlow website, via the eFlow mobile application, or in person at any retail outlet nationwide displaying the "Payzone" logo.

The automated camera system will match the vehicle's plate to the rental agency. The rental provider will settle the toll and late penalties on your behalf and subsequently bill your credit card on file, typically adding an administrative handling fee of 10.00 € to 15.00 €.

Yes. All physical barrier plazas (such as the M1, M4, M7/M8, and Limerick Tunnel) accept major international debit and credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) as well as contactless mobile payments. Cash is also accepted in designated lanes.

No. The tolling network applies strictly to the Republic of Ireland. Once you cross the open border into Northern Ireland (part of the United Kingdom), the motorways and primary roads are entirely free of toll charges.

While point-to-point toll networks are managed locally, planning an international trip can be daunting. EuroGoPass maps out your entire route, calculates exact expected cash and camera toll expenses across Ireland's 12 tolled sections, and instantly bundles any official digital vignettes you might need for European continental transit countries into a single checkout.

  • Tolls are collected on the following main routes:
  • M50 barrier-free: Urban ring road circling Dublin (between Junction 6 and Junction 7).
  • M1 Motorway: Dublin ↔ Belfast corridor (Gormanston to Monasterboice section).
  • M3 Motorway: Clonee ↔ Kells route.
  • M4 Motorway: Dublin ↔ Galway/Sligo corridor (Kilcock to Kinnegad section).
  • M7 / M8 Motorway: Dublin ↔ Cork/Limerick link (Portlaoise/Cullahill plaza).
  • N6 / N8 / N25 / N18: Regional arteries including the Galway bypass, Fermoy bypass, Waterford City bypass, and the Limerick Tunnel.
  • Dublin tunnels: The Dublin Port Tunnel and the East Link Toll Bridge in the metropolitan harbor district.
  • Northern Ireland motorways are toll-free once you cross the open border into the United Kingdom.
