Great Britain highway toll & road rules

Great Britain does not use a highway vignette system for passenger cars under 3.5 tonnes. Most motorways are completely free — watch out for left-hand traffic, isolated toll points, and strict London city emission zones.

Good to know

  • Drive on the Left: Traffic flows on the left-hand side of the road in Great Britain. Adjust your vehicle's headlights if driving a mainland European left-hand drive car to avoid blinding oncoming traffic.
  • The Dartford Crossing (M25): There are no physical toll booths on this vital London orbital route. Cameras scan your plate automatically. If you cross between 06:00 and 22:00, you must pay the Dart Charge online by 11:59 PM the following day. It is completely free overnight (22:00–06:00).
  • London Congestion Charge: Driving in central London during charging hours triggers a steep fee of £18 per day. As of late 2025/2026, all electric vehicles must also pay this charge. It operates Monday–Friday 07:00–18:00, and Saturday–Sunday/Bank Holidays 12:00–18:00.
  • London ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone): The ULEZ operates 24/7 across all 33 boroughs of Greater London. If your petrol vehicle doesn't meet Euro 4 (roughly pre-2006) or your diesel doesn't meet Euro 6 (roughly pre-September 2015), you must pay £12.50 per day.
  • Mandatory Foreign Vehicle Registration: Crucial for non-UK plates! Even if your car fully complies with London ULEZ standards, you must register it online with Transport for London (TfL) in advance. Failing to register will result in automatic, heavy penalty notices being sent to your home country.
  • Speed Limits in MPH: Speed limits are posted in miles per hour (mph), not km/h. Standard limits are 70 mph (112 km/h) on motorways, 60 mph (96 km/h) on single carriageways, and 30 mph (48 km/h) in built-up urban areas.

Unpaid Dartford Crossing (Dart Charge)£70.00Reduced to £35.00 if paid within 14 days; original toll still applies
Entering London ULEZ unregistered or non-compliant£160.00Reduced to £80.00 if paid within 14 days; enforced strictly by ANPR
Failure to pay London Congestion Charge£180.00Reduced to £90.00 if paid within 14 days

There are no highway vignette penalties for light passenger vehicles in Great Britain. Automated toll and city zone charges are strictly enforced via ANPR.

Commonquestions

No. Great Britain does not have a highway vignette system for passenger cars, motorcycles, or campervans. Standard highways and motorways are toll-free.

There are no physical barriers. You must pay the Dart Charge online via the official UK government portal, via phone, or at retail Payzone outlets. Payment is due by midnight on the day after you cross.

Yes. If you drive a vehicle with a non-UK registration plate into any part of Greater London, you must register it online with Transport for London (TfL) with proof of emissions compliance before your trip. If you do not register, the automated cameras cannot verify your Euro standard and will issue an automatic £160 fine, even if your car is fully compliant.

Electric vehicles are completely exempt from the 24/7 London ULEZ charge. However, from December 2025/January 2026 onwards, electric vehicles are no longer exempt from the central London Congestion Charge (£18/day).

Yes, several major cities—including Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield, Newcastle, Edinburgh, and Glasgow—operate local Clean Air Zones (CAZ) or Low Emission Zones (LEZ). Most standard petrol cars are exempt, but older diesel vehicles or vans may face localized daily fees or entry bans.

Getting to Great Britain from continental Europe involves traveling through various digital vignette zones. EuroGoPass plans your full international itinerary, flags complex automated toll points like the Dartford Crossing, gives you essential city zone compliance reminders, and bundles the official digital vignettes required for transit countries (like France, Belgium, or Germany) in a single checkout.

  • All standard motorways designated with an "M" prefix (e.g., M1, M4, M5, M25, M62) and primary federal "A" roads are free for light passenger transport.
  • The localized infrastructure exceptions that require isolated payments include: M6 Toll (the optional private bypass highway around Birmingham), A282 Dartford Crossing (the River Thames link on the eastern edge of London).
  • Local bridges: Small localized tolls apply to structures like the Humber Bridge (Hull), Tamar Bridge (Plymouth), and Mersey Gateway (Liverpool).
