Turkey highway tolls & HGS system

Turkey does not use a national vignette system. Tolls are collected electronically via the HGS (High-Speed Toll System) on motorways, bridges, and tunnels based on the distance traveled.

Toll rates vary depending on vehicle class (axle configuration) and the specific motorway operator. EuroGoPass calculates your route-specific toll budget, identifying whether you need to top up your HGS balance.

How it works

01

Map your route

Enter your Turkish itinerary into EuroGoPass; we aggregate the tolls for all motorways and bridge crossings.

02

Obtain an HGS tag

For foreign vehicles, we guide you on how to purchase and register an HGS tag or balance account at post offices (PTT) or designated banks.

03

Drive barrier-free

Sensors at toll gantries detect your tag or license plate as you pass at full speed.

Good to know

  • No vignettes: There are no stickers or time-based vignettes in Turkey. Access is purely electronic.
  • HGS (High-Speed Toll System): This is the mandatory electronic toll collection system. Ensure your account is topped up to avoid penalties.
  • Rental cars: Most rental cars in Turkey come equipped with an HGS tag. Always confirm this with your rental agency at pick-up to avoid double-charging or administrative fees.
  • Bridge fees: Crossing the Bosphorus bridges (Istanbul) is tolled. Be aware that some are one-way tolling, while others are two-way.
  • Penalty grace period: If you pass through a toll point without sufficient balance, you generally have a 15-day grace period to top up your HGS account to avoid a fine (which can be up to 4x the toll).

No. Turkey's modern motorway network is barrier-free and does not have manual toll booths for cash payments. You must use the HGS system.

Yes, most car rental companies provide vehicles with an HGS tag pre-installed. The charges are added to your final rental invoice.

We identify all toll gantries on your path, calculate your required budget, and guide you through the process of setting up your HGS account for a stress-free journey.

  • Motorways (Otoyol): Major corridors (e.g., O-3, O-4, O-5).
  • Crossings: Bosphorus bridges (Istanbul), Osmangazi Bridge, Eurasia Tunnel, Çanakkale 1915 Bridge.
  • Secondary national roads outside the Otoyol network remain toll-free.
