- No highway vignettes: Malta has absolutely no highway toll networks, barrier booths, or vignette requirements. Driving on any bypass, arterial route, or regional road across Malta and Gozo is completely free.
- The Valletta CVA zone: The historic center of the capital city Valletta uses an automated Controlled Vehicular Access (CVA) network. Cameras log your number plate upon entering and exiting the boundary to charge based on the exact duration of your stay.
- Exemption for foreign plates: If you bring your own vehicle to Malta via ferry, your foreign license plate is entirely exempt from the Valletta CVA congestion charge.
- Local rental car rules: Maltese-registered rental cars are fully subject to CVA charges. The rental company will receive the electronic bill as the registered owner and typically charge it back to your credit card on file, often adding a small administrative processing fee.
- Afternoon & weekend freedom: Entering Valletta after 14:00 on weekdays, or at any time on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, is completely free of charge.
- Driving on the left: Malta drives on the left-hand side of the road. Keep this in mind when negotiating roundabouts and narrow historic city streets.
