Where are tolls charged in Spain?
Tolls are not nationwide: much of Spain’s autovía network and many other roads are free, but toll sections remain on important routes. These include the AP-68 between Bilbao and Zaragoza, the AP-9 in Galicia, the AP-66 and AP-71 around León, and the AP-6 with the connecting AP-51 and AP-61 between Madrid, Segovia and Ávila. Tolls may also apply on radial motorways and selected approaches to Madrid: R-2, R-3, R-4, R-5, AP-36, AP-41 or M-12.

How to pay tolls in Spain
At a standard toll plaza, you will usually pay by payment card or in cash in euros. In a closed system, take a ticket when entering and use it when leaving to establish the distance travelled; elsewhere, pay a fixed amount directly at the plaza. Follow the signs above the lane, because not every lane accepts the same payment methods.
For regular or more convenient journeys, electronic toll payment Vía-T is available. The system reads the onboard device and charges the linked account, so drivers normally do not need to stop. A blue-marked lane may be reserved for Vía-T; do not enter it without the device. Operators may distinguish between Vía-T lanes, combined lanes and lanes for card or cash. What to do before entering a toll section
Slow down before the entrance, read the pictograms above the lanes and choose a lane for card or cash. Keep the ticket from the entrance until you leave the tolled section; losing it can make it harder to determine the correct toll.
With a rental car, check whether it has an active Vía-T device and how the rental company charges for toll passages. A trailer, motorhome or taller vehicle may fall into a different tariff category from a standard car. Before confirming the route in your navigation system, compare the toll option with a free alternative: the time saved may not match the difference in price.
Watch out for barrier-free Free Flow tolling
Some routes use Free Flow tolling, a system without a physical barrier. You do not pay at a conventional booth because an electronic system records the passage. Operator Bidelan, for example, describes a barrier-free system on the Irun–Etzegarate axis in Gipuzkoa province. If you do not have a compatible electronic toll device, check the relevant operator’s procedure for registering the number plate and paying before you drive.
